Coaching
This section is for those Coaches who are carded with the NZ Academy of Sport South Island or who wish to learn more about the Coach Carding Programme. The New Zealand Academy of Sport is committed to nurturing and developing the talents of its carded coaches by providing facilities and comprehensive services to benefit the coach both in their sporting and non-sporting lives.
Coach Carding
The purpose of the carded coach programme is to remove the constraints faced by high performance coaches, achieved by defining the specific requirements of each coach and understanding the expectations of their National Sport Organisations.
Coaches who are "carded" are eligible for an allocation of services, determined by their National Sport Organisation and the New Zealand Academy of Sport. National Sport Organisations are responsible for the carding of coaches in their sports.
If you are not carded and would like to know contact your National Sport Organisation, or click here for more information on the carded coaches programme and a list of carded coaches.
Coach Performance Programme
The NZAS South Island supports the coaches of high performance athletes through a professional development programme of workshops, seminars, access to facilities and resources, and individual support services.
There are two levels of coach in the Coach Performance Programme – Performance Plus (P+) and Performance Coach (P). This aligns the coaches in the programme with SPARC’s investment policy and each NSO’s High Performance Programme. Services are geared to the level of coaches.
Coach workshops cover a range of development needs specific to high performance coaches, including Learned Optimism, Strategic Planning, SleepWell Workshops, Project Management Workshop, Conflict Resolution, Emotional Competency and Excellence and Innovation.
The NZAS South Island, as part of the NZAS Network, is also involved in the National Coach Accelerator Programme, focusing on a small group of coaches capable of coaching World, Olympic or Paralympic medal winners by 2012. For more information on this programme click here
Coach Resource Centres
Currently there are three Coach Resource Centres, based at the NZAS South Island Centres of Excellence in Christchurch at QE II Park and in Dunedin in Logan Park Drive, and in Invercargill at Sport Southland.
The Resource Centres are equipped with leading edge skill and game analysis software, as well as providing audio-visual resources and internet access. The rooms can also be booked for meetings, presentations, coaching activities etc.
The NZAS South Island can also provide assistance to coaches and NSO's in the running of coaching courses and training camps.
National Coaching Strategy
The quality of coaching is what will allow New Zealand to compete internationally against nations with far more funding and far greater numbers participating in sport. SPARC has worked with coaches to develop a strategy and tools to create a world-class coaching environment in New Zealand. The strategy has been developed for coaches by coaches to meet the needs of all coaches in New Zealand. It addresses issues associated with the current environment and is aligned to athletes’ needs.
