Major Facilities
The location of the Academy South Island (ASI) in Dunedin is unique in that a range of educational and career opportunities are available through the three tertiary institutions and the local business community. There are a range of excellent sport-specific and generic training facilities across the South Island that the Academy has access to. Our mobile testing unit also delivers specialist services across the South Island.
Mobile Unit
The Ford transit van has had a purpose fit out to install working areas, equipment and technology to enable the vehicle to operate as a mobile lab, training and analysis station, for athletes and coaches across the South Island.
The mobile service unit has been developed to enhance the Academy's capacity to support and provide services to athletes and coaches in the environment where they live and train, as well as provide support for training camps, and specialist events.
Based in Dunedin, with a vast area to cover - having talented athletes spread from Takaka in the Tasman area to Tuatapere in Southland, the Academy South Island has had to develop innovative and world leading approaches to distance support. The mobile service unit seemed the logical way to approach our challenges of distance and getting people and specialized equipment out into the field.
Specialist Enviromental Facilities
The specialist environmental facilities provided by the University of Otago are unique national resources. The swimming flume and its associated immersion tank are also able to be used as an environmental facility since the water temperature can be controlled between 15-32 ¡C.
We have two altitude centres in close proximity to Wanaka and only 3.5 hours from Dunedin or 5 hours from Christchurch that are suitable as training camp venues.
Sports Medicine
All sport medicine services provided by ASI by both University of Otago clinical staff and independent consultants have experience in the support and treatment of elite athletes. Satellite centres will be established in Invercargill, Queenstown and Christchurch.
Sports Science
Together with access to the expertise and facilities of the National School of Physical Education, and the internationally recognised Human Performance Centre, the NZ Academy of Sport will be uniquely positioned to provide sport science services of the highest international standard.
