Coaches Information

Introduction

The Academy Board of Trustees and staff believe that central to all of this is the coach. That any programme, while athlete focused, must be driven by the coach and that the role of the Academy is to support the coach in doing this. Just as an athlete in training is continually learning, so is the coaching process a continual learning experience. Coaches need to be involved in this process to ensure ongoing and improved outcomes for both athlete and coach. The two key areas that coaches can be assisted with in their learning are: Personal and Professional Development.

Information will generally be delivered
Prime Ministers Coaching Scholarships

These scholarships are available annually, for the professional development of coaches, and the Academy can assist coaches in the preparation of their application.

Coach Resource Centres

Currently there are three Coach Resource Centres based in Christchurch at the Academy Service Centre, QE II Park; Dunedin at the Academy Offices, Logan Park Drive, and in Invercargill at Sport Southland.

The Resource Centres are equipped with leading edge skill and game analysis software, as well as providing audio-visual resources and internet access. The rooms can also be booked for meetings, presentations, coaching activities etc.

The Academy can also provide assistance to coaches and NSO's in the running of coaching courses and training camps.

Through the provision of these services and programmes it is hoped that a culture develops that views coaching as: A collegial and collaborative activity across all codes, with constant improvement as the norm, and with coaches being valued nationally, individually and as a collective group.

Who can access these Services and Programmes

Any coach of a carded athlete is able to access Academy services and programmes. There is also, a soon to be launched, pilot coach carding scheme which will see these carded coaches able to access additional, specialised services. However the Academy also recognises the importance of supporting aspiring high performance coaches in the South Island, for the future growth of coaching and attempts to do this where and whenever possible and practicable.

What if the athlete is 'de-carded'?

If a coach's athlete is 'de-carded' this does not mean the coach is no longer a high performance coach. Therefore the Academy will look to continue working with this coach in their development. However because of resources and time this may have to occur at a reduced level.

How do I get in contact?

As the coach of a 'carded' athlete, your athlete should have designated you as their coach, and you will be on the Academy's database. The Academy looks to be proactive and will contact you. However if you have not heard form the Academy or have any enquiries at all, please contact us. Coaches should feel free to contact the Academy for help and advice. This organisation exists to assist coaches and athletes achieve their goals in the sporting arena.
