NZAS Workshop for Performance Sports
New Zealand Academy of Sport is hosting the ‘Delivering a world class integrated support programme’ workshop on Auckland on 5 & 6 December in order to assist performance sports with the development of their support programmes. The aim is to use the expertise and experiences of our leading coaches and providers to broaden the thinking on how best to deliver a world class support programme. There are a number of successful models in use currently, and there are a number of innovations being made across a number of sports. By different sports sharing their experiences about the coordination of networks, communication systems and delivery mechanisms Performance Sports will gain insight into areas for future development. Also presenting will be an ex-pat Kiwi Darlene Harrison from the UK Sports Institute. Darlene is an expert in IT and coaching with a particular interest in global communication and a web based system for developing a knowledge base.
The workshop will be held at the Ibis/Novotel complex next to Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland. It commences at 3pm on Thursday 5 December and will conclude at 3pm on Friday 6 December. NZAS Performance Directors will liaise with their sports regarding registrations.
Quarterly Newsletter
The New Zealand Academy of Sport National Office is launching a new quarterly publication this month. The publication will profile coaches and athletes and keep you updated on the what is happening in the New Zealand Academy of Sport.Carded Coach Pilot
75 coaches from over 20 sports will take part in a pilot programme for carded coaches. Most of the coaches have now attended an introduction to the "Carded Coach" pilot. These introduction meetings were completed in Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Wellington and Christchurch. The pilot is the first step towards introducing a scheme that will provide New Zealand's best coaches - and those heading towards that status - with exciting new levels of support and services.
Service Update
Nearly 8,500 services have been provided to carded athletes by the Network in the first quarter of 2002 (July-September).
ACE (Athlete Career and Education) National Conference
Last week, the ASI hosted the second annual conference of ACE advisors in Christchurch. Key sessions focussed on career planning, peer mentoring and developing the ACE programme. The broad definition of the word career was exemplified with the wide range of planning tools and techniques available. Advisors had opportunities to test run the latest options in computer-based career analysis programmes.
Glenys Kerr, ACE advisor and career counsellor with AUT, introduced a peer mentoring technique that facilitates professional development of ACE advisors.
With the ACE programme now two years old, it was time to think about how to mature the programme. Using a ‘world café’ approach, the advisors generated the foundations of the next wave of ACE developments. Watch out for closer and more tailored relationships with sports, as well as ACE integrating its services more closely with sports medicine and sports science.
Prime Minsiter's Sports Scholarships
Recognising that it is not always feasible or desirable for athletes to pursue studies while training and competing at the highest level the NZAS is introducing a "Deferred Prime Ministers Scholarship" available from December 2002. This change in policy is to assist athletes by allowing them to complete or commence study programmes once their sporting career has drawn to a close. To be eligible for a deferred scholarship an athlete must have been carded at Level 1 for a minimum of 2 years, and scholarships must be taken up within 18 months of the individual being de-carded. Further details are available through the NZAS Network PM's Scholarship Coordinators.Prime Minister's Sport Scholarship Application Deadlines are:
- 2 December - Prime Minister's Sport applications due for new applicants.
- 31 December - Prime Minister Sport Scholarship applicants due for current recipients
Prime Ministers High Performance Coaching Scholarships
2003 will be the second year of the Prime Minister's High Performance Coach Scholarships. National Sports Organisations will receive guidelines for applying for scholarships by the end of November. All coaches interested in applying for a scholarship should contact their national sports organisation.
